The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) was founded 1972 as a result of The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which assembled in Stockholm, Sweden, earlier that year. Tasked with the responsibility of addressing environmental problems among United Nations agencies, UNEP acts as the leading global environmental authority promoting coherent implementation of sustainable development and principal advocate for the global environment.
The UNEP seeks to provide:
- Assessment of global, regional and national environmental conditions and trends
- Development of international and national environmental instruments
- Strengthening of institutions ministering knowledgeable management of the environment
